DERBY - Waugh, Lee Earl, retired United States Postal Service employee, died Sunday, July 26, 2009 in Frisco, Texas. Lee was born August 11, 1915 in Derby, the son of Charles H. and Blanche Waugh. He attended all 12 years of school at Derby and graduated from Derby High in 1933. He studied music and piano at Power-Myers Conservatory of Music in Wichita from 1930 to 1937. On June 12, 1940 he married Melba Howard in McAllen, Texas. In 1935, he began working for the Postal Service, but was drafted to the Navy in December of 1943. He served our country until his honorable discharge in 1946. Once returning from the Navy he returned to Wichita and continued his work at the Postal Office until 1956. He and Melba moved to Derby and Lee became the first letter carrier in Derby. Lee retired in 1974. After retirement he worked for the Kansas Turnpike from 1974 to 1983 and the Derby Wal-Mart from 1987 to 1992. Lee became a part of the First Christian Church in its first year of its existence in 1956 and worked there as choir director, pianist, deacon and elder through the many years. Lee had a great love of music and was a longtime piano teacher in Derby. Lee was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Maurice and Lawrence Waugh; sister, Betty Hill. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Melba Waugh; children, Rosalie Weyer, Charles Waugh, Robert Waugh and Anne Grothaus; six grandchildren; six great grandchildren and many other friends and family. Viewing noon to 8pm Thursday; funeral service 2pm Friday, all at Smith Mortuary, 1415 N. Rock Road, Derby. A memorial has been established with Hillcrest Christian Church Building Fund, 509 S. DERBY - Waugh, Melba Anna Louise, age 96, passed away Wednesday, February 8, 2012. Visitation 1-8pm Thursday, February 9, with family present 4-6pm; funeral service 10am Friday, February 10, both at Senter-Smith Mortuary, 501 S.E. Louis Blvd., Mulvane.
Melba was born May 9th, 1915 in Hampton, Iowa to Harry James and Millie Augustus (Scott) Howard. She graduated from North High School in 1933 and went on to attend Friends University to study music. Melba married Lee Waugh on June 12th, 1940 in McAllen, TX. She was the organist for Broadway Mortuary and Broadway Christian Church, later joining First Christian Church of Derby in 1956 where she played the organ, was a Sunday school teacher and directed the Junior Choir. She had a love of music and was a long time piano teacher in Derby.
Melba was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, Lee Earl Waugh; brothers, Tom and Jim Howard. She is survived by her children, Rosalie Weyer, Charles Waugh, Robert Waugh and Anne Grothaus; 6 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; sister, Helen Bormann. Her inner light burned bright where all could see her kindness, gentleness and compassion. We're going to miss her deeply, but rejoice in her returning home to the Father.
