FOUND DEAD IN BED.
James Utterback Dies Friday Night in His Room in John Lee’s Building.

Last Saturday morning about 4:30 Jason West, who opened up John Lee’s saloon to build fires, sweep out etc., went to one of the rooms upstairs to awaken James Utterback who had been sleeping there during Lee’s absence in New Mexico. Getting no response to his calls he went to the room to rouse him and discovered that he was dead. West at once notified James Lee, also undertakers Barnhizer & Vandivier. They telephoned to Coroner Sheek at Greenwood who came to Franklin on the 5:30 car. The remains were removed to the undertakers’ room and the coroner with the assistance of Drs. Clarence and Oren Province held a post mortem examination. It was found that the heart was in a diseased condition that caused death. A fibrous clot had formed seven inches in length which extended from the mitral valve into the aorta. The physicians expressed surprise that death had not come sooner when they saw the condition of the heart.
It was evident from the condition of the body that death had come but a short time before the body was found. Mr. Utterback was fully dressed and it is supposed he had risen, dressed ready to come down and open up, and then feeling bad lay down and died. He had been suffering from the grippe for three weeks. Having heart trouble, this intensified it as it is a characteristic of the grippe and resulted fatally. The evening before, he had been in Freeman’s cigar store at eight o’clock. When he left he stated that he was going to bed. This was the last seen of him until found by West.
Deceased was born Jan. 29, 1862. He was the son of the late Anderson Utterback. Besides his wife and daughter he is survived by several sisters.
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon from the home of his sister, Mrs. Gardner Ragsdale. Burial at Greenlawn.
