Virginia Howard Virginia Brooks Howard passed away Monday, January 12, 2009, at the age of 82. She was born in San Antonio, Texas to Frances Kinney and William Settles. Virginia had a successful career with Mobil Oil Corporation in Corpus Christi and later in Houston, where she retired in 1985. She was fortunate enough to enjoy a long retirement, during which she began a second career of volunteerism. In 1993, she relocated to Dripping Springs to be near several of her children and grandchildren. It was then that she began volunteering at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, where she cultivated many friendships and a love of native plants and gardening. As a member of Dripping Springs Methodist Church, she actively practiced her faith while volunteering at the food pantry and in the Kairos Prison Ministry. She also volunteered at animal shelters and for Meals on Wheels. A life-long Democrat, Virginia was fond of quoting Molly Ivins and Ann Richards. She was married to the late Harry James Howard, Jr. for many years, and together they had six children. Virginia is preceded in death by her brother Alan Settles. She is survived by her six children: Jim Howard of Bartlett, Joanne Prasthofer and Judy Vest of the Houston area, Mark Howard of Dripping Springs, Tina Leva and John Howard of the Austin area, and their families. Her brother, Robert Settles and wife Frances, of Michigan, and brother, Wayne Morris and wife Lucille of Corpus Christi, also survive her. True to her nature-lover's spirit, Virginia requested her ashes be scattered in a favorite hill country location. A private family gathering is planned for that purpose. The family would like to thank Dr. Ashley Stiegler, whose gentle guidance started us on the difficult journey of dementia, and Dr. Teri Albright, who helped us navigate the end of it. We would like to thank the Hospice Austin team and the caregivers at The Summit at Westlake Hills, all of who cared for our mother with kindness and affection and showed her the utmost respect at the end of her life. Virginia would be honored by a contribution to the charity of your choice. To Plant Memorial Trees in memory, please visit our Sympathy Store.
